SINGAPORE FOOTBALL: Selangor - LionsXII

Posted: 08 Feb 2012 06:36 AM PST

The LionsXII's hotly-anticipated clash against Selangor turned out to be a pretty ironic one; it was full of end-to-end action without actually deserving to be labelled a high-quality game, but the two goals scored were top class efforts. It could be said that the real reason why the game went end-to-end was that neither side could find the right final pass. Selangor outdid the Lions in that aspect, though; attackers Amirulhadi Zainal and Amri Yahyah had decent one-on-one openings against Izwan Mahbud whereas the Lions could not even carve out one such opportunity.

The Goals
44th minute - Shaiful Esah puts in a high cross from the left flank. Shahril Ishak, knowing he is in an offside position, leaves it for the onside Raihan Rahman to chase. Raihan keeps the ball in play and cuts it back to Shahril, who sidesteps a defender and fires home with his left foot. 0-1 LionsXII

45th minute - Selangor striker Amri Yahyah controls a cross from the left flank and lays it off to midfielder K. Gurusamy. The central midfielder proceeds to throw his name into the Goal Of The Season reckoning with a tremendously-struck half-volley that rockets into the top right-hand corner of the LionsXII net. 1-1 Selangor

The Players
Lineup (LionsXII):
(4-4-1-1) Izwan Mahbud; Madhu Mohana, Baihakki Khaizan, Hariss Harun, Shakir Hamzah; Raihan Rahman (Yasir Hanapi), Juma'at Jantan, Isa Halim, Shaiful Esah; Shahril Ishak (Sevki Sha'ban); Agu Casmir (Sufian Anuar)

Star Man (LionsXII): Shahril Ishak. Scored the Lions' only goal, and was at the heart of everything positive about their attacking game. It's a pity that Shahril is frequently made to do things like stand alone up front forty metres from any midfield teammate and expect passes to land right at his feet for him to do things with. When he's allowed to play his natural game, which he was tonight a greater degree than previous games, he is one of the most dangerous playmakers in the Malaysian competition.

Star Man (Selangor): Bunyamin Omar. K. Gurusamy may have netted a world-class goal, but on overall performance the Selangor right-back pips his teammate to this spot. Bunyamin was full of running and managed, for the most part, to nullify the threat posed by Shaiful Esah and his cultured left boot.

Could Have Done Better: A lot of people. Madhu Mohana never looked comfortable at right-back when faced with either the pace of K. Solehin or the guile of Mohammed Fitri. Isa Halim's game tonight involved square passes, backwards passes and woeful forward passes. Agu Casmir toiled hard but looked slow and played several facepalm-worthy passes.

Other Thoughts

  • LionsXII head coach V. Sundramoorthy got his tactics horribly wrong today; this was most evident in the first half, where it seemed that the Lions were aiming to sit back, soak up pressure and hit Selangor on the counterattack. Unfortunately, when your front two is made up of Shahril Ishak and Agu Casmir - good players, but lacking in the speed stakes - and your wingers are, in fact, full-backs by trade, you are asking for a seizure every time your team attempts to counter. Given that Shahril is, right now, one of the indispensible members of this starting eleven, it could be argued that the ideal front four for such tactics consists of Shahril, Fazli Ayob, Taufiq Rahmat and Yasir Hanapi.
